Once again, this season features another incredible, playful show by JC/DC.
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, a fan of heroes and myths, has been creating a playful universe since the very beginning of his career as a stylist. Over time, he has given tributes to numerous figures ranging from Mickey Mouse to Louis XVI and Andy Warhol.
The dreamer is here: all in the clouds, no longer just the head, like a nostalgic feeling of imponderability. His color codes are prominent with a primary game between black and white. Innocence is present in the show’s attitude and in the runway design. Lego, dolls, princesses and clowns are all part of his 2009 summer collection.
The trends are lighter and stronger than in previous years. Like during all times of crisis, Art is reacting with an opposite movement and becoming louder. Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is the most inventive in this trend, and takes the harlequin idea to its most hilarious feeling. Only he could orchestrate such a collection.

He started his career in 1968, for Ko&Co, and by 1969 he was already using surprising and unconventional materials like floor fabrics, sponges and army canvases. He was directly inspired and stimulated by the established artists of the time, such as Raoul Haussmann, Jimmy Page, Roland Topor, Keith Haring and Basquiat. Avant-garde, expressionist and pop art have also remained key elements of his collections, and artists like Blais, Robert Combas, Herve di Rosa, Loulou Picasso and Miguel Barcelo have all painted his designs.
As you may know, his iconic designs are the teddy-bear dress, the poncho for 2, super sized clothing and super sized prints. His designs has been exposed in the most prestigious modern art museums in the world, like the Galliera in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, VIA, the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and the Modern Art Museum in Troyes. His work has also been featured on the covers of most of the 20th century’s magazines. He has worked for the movie industry as a costume designer and as a producer, and also creates furniture and new marketing concepts. It is no wonder, then, that he has been the head of the French Federation of Fashion and of Ready-to-Wear in Paris since 1999.
